I met Arwa who set up The Odd Piece over 4 years ago, both our children have been in the same class since FS1 and have the youngest have become best buddies.
Arwa asked me to come by and look at shooting her products at The Odd Piece a while ago when it was in Jumeirah but the space was cramped and not easy to shoot in. Now the Odd Piece has moved to Alkersal Ave and they have lots of space to accommodate a photoshoot of their products.
It was a first of mine to shoot so much larger pieces of product, I enjoyed the shoot so much I am hoping to do more in this coming year. I would love to have so many of these pieces in my home but seeing as I have 6 dogs I cant be sure these special things would get broken by a random wagging tail or a spontaneous run. So I will stick to looking at them in the shop and online. Arwa is always off travelling looking for other pieces of furniture to add the the shop, I know she travels to Paris and Lebanon quite a bit to source such individual itms, some of these pieces are very old and have history. Would recommend anyone who loves one of a kind modern and vintage furniture to head down to Alkersal Ave in Al Quoz to check out The Odd Piece, by the way the coffee is awesome there too!
From The Odd Piece…Arwa Hafiz burst onto Dubai’s burgeoning design scene in January 2013 with a vintage-themed furniture exhibition. The enthusiastic reception she received made her realize that this sophisticated, multicultural market was ready for something different.
Born in Saudi Arabia and raised between Jeddah and London, Arwa inherited her passion for homes and interiors from her father who liked to give the family home periodic facelifts. She realized that Dubai had little in way of home design stores or galleries that offer original or antique pieces. She was inspired to set up The Odd Piece, traveling extensively to source unique furniture and home accessories from the markets, souks, trade shows and antique quarters of France, Italy, Turkey, Morocco and South Africa.Arwa first set up The Odd Piece as an online boutique. In December 2013, she opened The Odd Piece furniture gallery in the popular Wasl Square complex in the heart of Jumeirah, one of Dubai’s oldest neighbourhoods.
The Odd Piece specializes in gorgeous vintage and mid-century modern furniture, while also including contemporary pieces and home accessories of exceptional design, craftsmanship and character in its offering. The Odd Piece creates a seamless dialogue between vintage and modern, with a collection of striking, inspiring pieces that make a house a home.
