Health Benefits of Blueberries

Health Benefits of Blueberries

I’m a huge lover of all berries – raspberries, blueberries, blackberries and strawberries and now I live in the UK I can grow my own again!

They always look so pretty in front of the camera and adding a touch of gorgeous natural light to these babies you can get some lovely images. Check out my other blog posts here on photography tips and watch out for more on food photography tips coming soon!

In the meantime, I thought I’d share a few benefits of how much these gorgeous berries are for us…..

Blueberries are sweet, nutritious and very popular with children and adults.

Often labelled a “superfood,” they are low in calories and incredibly good for you.

They are so tasty and convenient that many people consider them to be their favourite fruit.

Here are 3 health benefits of blueberries that are supported by research.

1. Blueberries are Low in Calories, But High in Nutrients

The blueberry is a flowering shrub that produces berries that are coloured blue to purple, also known as blueberries.

It is strongly related to similar shrubs, such as those that produce cranberries and huckleberries.

Blueberries are small, around 5-16 millimetres in diameter, and have a flared crown at the end.

They are green in colour at first, then change to blue-purple as they ripen.

These are the two most common types:

  1. Highbush blueberries are the most commonly grown species in the US.
  2. Lowbush blueberries are often referred to as “wild” blueberries. They are typically smaller and richer in some antioxidants.

This is what typical blueberries look like:

Blueberries are among the most nutrient-dense berries. A 1 cup serving (148 grams) of blueberries contains (1):

  • Fibre 4 grams.
  • Vitamin C: 24% of the RDA.
  • Vitamin K: 36% of the RDA.
  • Manganese: 25% of the RDA.
  • Then it contains small amounts of various other nutrients.

They are also about 85% water, and an entire cup contains only 84 calories, with 15 grams of carbohydrates.

Calorie for calorie, this makes them an excellent source of several important nutrients.

2. Blueberries are the King of Antioxidant Foods

Antioxidants are important.

They protect our bodies from damage by free radicals, unstable molecules that can damage cellular structures and contribute to ageing and diseases like cancer

Blueberries are believed to contain the highest antioxidant capacity of ALL commonly consumed fruits and vegetables.

The main antioxidant compounds in blueberries belong to a large family of polyphenols, called flavonoids.

One group of flavonoids, in particular, anthocyanins, is thought to be responsible for much of the beneficial health effects.

They have been shown to directly increase antioxidant levels inside the body.

Blueberries have the highest antioxidant capacity of all commonly consumed fruits and vegetables. Flavonoids appear to be the major antioxidant compounds.

3. Blueberries Reduce DNA Damage, Which May Help Protect Against Ageing and Cancer

Oxidative DNA damage is part of everyday life.

It is said to occur tens of thousands of times per day, in every single cell in the body.

DNA damage is part of the reason we grow older, and it also plays an important role in the development of diseases like cancer.

Because blueberries are high in antioxidants, they can help neutralize some of the free radicals that cause damage to our DNA.

In one 4-week study, 168 participants were instructed to drink 1 litre (34 ounces) of a mixture of blueberry and apple juice, every day.

At the end of the study, oxidative DNA damage due to free radicals was reduced by 20%.

These findings have also been supported by smaller studies using either fresh or powdered blueberries.

Several studies have shown that blueberries and blueberry juice can protect against DNA damage, a leading driver of aging and cancer.

I love taking my portable studio into an office on shoot day! The staff all get excited about being in front of the camera! My set up for Business and headshot photography here in Hertfordshire is a simple one, either natural lighting making the best use of gorgeous window light or I can bring a portable studio where I can set up in a corner of the office and create studio style images for the staff and the client.

Here you can see examples of natural lighting and a mini studio set up with a coloured background.

Al Rawabi Social Media Photography and Videography

A while ago I was approached by a company representing Al Rawabi Dairy here in Dubai. They wanted me to be involved in their social media posts – photography and Videography.

You will see my work featured on Facebook and Instagram

The posts will mostly have a message regarding their products hence the product is heavily featured, I have tried to twist it up a little with a slightly blurred product in the background but it wasn’t to their satisfaction. Im always looking for ideas for their posts, its not easy trying to make all posts different! 🙂

Here are some of my images from the last months Campaign – All about Vitamin D milk….

Couqley Restaurant shoot Dubai

Couqley Restaurant shoot Dubai

Recently I had the pleasure to photograph one of Dubai’s little treasures – Couqley in JLT. If your a fan of French food then this is a must to try! The french onion soup was to die for – sorry yes I did eat the food – it was divine! They re pretty new in Dubai – Couqley is a French bistro with two branches, one located in ‘The Alleyway’ in Beirut’s trendy Gemmayze district and the second branch is in Blueberry Square in Dbayeh, just off the main highway. Now one in JLT Dubai.

Couqley offers traditional bistro meals by Partner & Corporate Chef Alexis Couquelet.

The brief was to have an inviting atmosphere and show part of their look – the red and green check napkins. The feel was to photograph the shots as if people were just about to sit and eat the meal, very relaxed but focused on the beauty of the food.

Live loud Girl – Linda Dekkers

Live loud Girl – Linda Dekkers

Mamas, if interiors are your thing then Linda Dekkers will need no introduction. The awesome mama behind the Live Loud Girl Blog and interior styling service is a regular source of inspo for the Sassy Mama team – we spend hours trawling her instagram feed for gorgeous pics of her latest projects and beautiful ideas. We got an exclusive peek into Linda’s gorgeous new Jumeirah villa (which made us instantly want to go home and declutter!) and spent a few wonderful moments getting to know her adorable boys Jack (aged 5) and Sam (aged 4). Here’s how she does it all, mamas!

Freshup juice shoot in Qatar

Freshup juice shoot in Qatar

Last week I was invited to Qatar with a lovely food stylist I know Aliaa Al Sawy, we were to work on a new concept that is shortly opening there Called Freshup. The small cafe mixes up fresh juices, smoothies and other drinks that are very healthy and have fresh ingredients, some even have protein powder for those who wish to get their intake after the gym etc. I was very surprised with the product, I didnt expect it to look as good as it did and with a mix of natural light and studio lights we managed to get a feel in the photography to represent the product.

We were pleased with the end results even though we had to shoot more than we normally would in 2 days. It was a great learning experience trying to get all my camera equipment and lighting on my flight, but it all worked out well and only one small reflector was broken.

I love being a food photographer here in Dubai but to be able to travel and shoot the things I love in other countries makes me even happier and more fulfilled.

More cafe food photography

Recently I was invited to photograph some dishes at More cafe for social media. It was a quick shoot and no styling involved, the food was coming out fast and I had to move quickly! The restaurant was busy and dark with no natural light, there was not much room to set up my lights but I think considering my restrictions it went well and Im pleased with the outcome.

PROFESSIONAL HEADSHOTS Hertfordshire

Professional headshots – portraits

Professional headshots – portraits

This week I was asked to create a series of creative portraits to be put together in a collage for a website. Being a portrait photographer in the UK and Dubai keeps me busy and I get to meet lots of interesting people. This client wanted all the shots to be in black & white and also a series of details to be put together to make a creative collage to represent himself on his new website. Using a few lenses – 50mm and 24-105mm for the portraits and my tripod for the slow shutter speed full length I had fun with both my Canon and Sony cameras. Hope you like them as much as I do……

Food Photography for Betty Crocker

Food Photography for Betty Crocker

Getting ready for Ramadan here in Dubai we did a shoot with Betty Crocker Arabia where we used their products to create new recipes. Using elements of the Muslim faith and an afternoon light feel we created some pleasing images for them to use for their recipe campaign – 30 days – 30 recipes.

You can see their advertising campaign on their Facebook page – Betty Crocker Arabia with all the branding added to my shots.
